My Job

What is interesting about my job is that, technically, I work in an IT role. My official title is IT Liaison for the International Space Station Integration Office.

People come to me every day with their IT issues, and I help them resolve them. Boeing IT here in Houston and KSC in Florida bring their IT problem to me locally or remotely. I help fix their problems.

But I have not had one hour of IT training. I have no IT certification. Computers, networks, and most software make sense to me. My training and background are in Broadcast Video Engineering. That is what my Bachelor of Science degree is in. When the broadcast industry switched from analog to digital, I lost my career. I had to find other ways to make a living. I tried live TV broadcasting, which I absolutely loved, but I could not use my talents to help spread the political left's propaganda, so I walked away. I walked away from a very healthy paycheck, too. No amount of money was worth my soul.

I worked in AV installing projectors and sound systems. I got a call out of the blue from Boeing asking if I would be interested in working in their IT department as a video conferencing operator. I had applied to Boeing for another position a few years earlier, so that is how they had my contact info. That was in 2006. So, I call myself the Accidental IT Guy. I stumbled into this part of my career path… or it was a blessing from God—the offer and the knowledge of how to do my job well. I like to think it is the latter.
