Projects
I follow several car groups, and I see many different ways people approach car projects. The one thing I really do not understand is that young people usually talk about trivial things like tire size, color match, radios, and which mechanic to go to. Those of us who have been around the sun many more times talk more about engine builds, frame-off restos, and the good old days.
Then, other groups, like the VW Bug groups, work their best to keep these old cars on the road. I am working on a complete engine build from scratch, so I read everything I can, since air-cooled engines are so different from V8s. V8s are my comfort zone but I like venturing out to learn new stuff. I have been collecting parts for over a year, think I have everything I need, and have started building. Yesterday, I read a post where a guy started his assembly and had the crank and rods assembled. He ended by saying that he is going to cover the assembly with plastic until he can order more parts. I thought it was funny how I haven't put a single bolt on anything until I have everything, and this guy is putting stuff together as he collects them.
I guess that is just the difference in how we approach projects. It reminded me of something I heard when I was young about the difference between people. 'One guy will collect all the firewood he will need for the night before starting his fire. The other will start his fire, warm up, then collect the wood as he needs it.' I am not sure which is the better way, but both accomplish their tasks.
